I have been photographing since around 1958. When asked "What do I shoot?", I answer "Anything I see." I work in color as well as black and white, since for me, different images have different feels in the two media. You will see some of this as I add more pictures. I hope you all enjoy the work (play).

The shovel is a reminder that growing flowers may require digging and garbage pail lid reminds us of getting rid of the weeds we pull. NYC the Kaleidoscopic : This group of images briefly highlights our latest trip to NY with friends. I have tried to capture the variety and energy of the city. The Brooklyn Museum of Art El Anatsui show is a definite must see if you are in NY or the show comes any place near where you live. The other must do is the West Side Highline, a park/walkway created from an abandoned railway yard. Though the weather was a bit cold the city folks were warm and welcoming.

Hidden Images : I shot this with a couple of my friends. There is an abandoned concrete building which is a tad interesting from the outside but really interesting on the inside. Hidden in the dark are some great graffiti. Here a tripod is needed and it is best to not touch the vines outside as many are poison ivy vines. Enjoy

The Road to Lockhart, SC : This winter trip took us to Lockhart, SC via Jonesville. In Jonesville we found an old building which appears to have been a mill attached to a tire store. There were great textures, structure and colors there. I thought the traffic light reflections were fun. Lockhart yielded a wonderful collection of automobile and a few old buildings. The collector and his wife were generous with their time in showing us their amazing treasures.

Upstate Wanderings : Fall, after most of the leaves have fallen appeals to me. I like the spareness of the trees, the brown colors of the "sleeping" vegetation, and the slanting light on sunny days. These images are from two separate trips with a couple of my shooting buddies. We wandered through Pendleton, Seneca, Abbyville and Waterloo, all in South Carolina's upstate.These are rural to semi rural areas some of which are in varying degrees of entropy, sad but interesting. I have mixed in some black and white images because I could not decide which I liked best.

Rutherfordton to Waco : My buddy and I decided to revisit Waco, NC and went by way of Rutherfordton. We checked out a farm on the way where the farmer was raising water buffalo. The animals and the old buildings were a treasure. The old mill in Waco is still functional and mills soy beans and wheat. More great stuff to photograph.

Stowe Gardens : Daniel Stowe Garden in Belmont, NC is a jewel for flowers and butterflies. We went on a hot summer day so the butterflies were very active and a challenge to photograph. The reward for work with the camera is a large piece of cake.

John Campbell Folk School : The John C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina is a magical place in which to learn. I took a weekend course in Beginning Weaving. Great teacher, great students and lots of hard work. I did have time to photograph around and in the school as well as in the neighboring countryside. The nearest city is Murphy, NC. A trip out that way is definitely recommended.

John C. Campbell Folk School Experience : Alice (my wife)and I just got back from a week at the JC Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC where I took a photography course. The first set of images in this gallery are from our trip up and includes some px from Clayton, Georgia and around Lake Hiawassee. The lake px were taken during some rainy weather (which is great for pictures). Enjoy the fall colors and other stuff. I just added some sunrise, moonrise, sunset px as I work my way through the week's images. We got up early, stayed up late and were more or less chilled while waiting for the best light. It was well worth it for me (and my friends know I am not a very early riser.

Upcountry History Museum : The Greenville, SC Upcountry History Museum held the opening for one of the best photography exhibits I have seen recently. I featured images from William Coxe and James Wilson files as well as the work of some earlier photographers. They were two of Greenville's premier journalistic photographers. Two of my friends and I had the opportunity to choose and work on the files of James Wilson. It was great fun and seeing his work printed and properly presented was like going to a good school of photography. William Coxe's work was also well done and shown. Go see this show if you get a chance. It is worth a trip to Greenville. Cheers, Bruce

Gloucester Massachusetts, Cape Ann : This set of images is from another road trip, this one to Gloucester, Massachusetts. I will try to make this blog chronological to give you a sense of the trip. There will be road shots, rest stop shots as well as the usual scenery and thing shots. Have fun on day one and throughout the rest of the trip. A few groups of pictures need identification. The fishing boats are in various coves on Cape Ann. The orange painted wall and Robot image are part of the Cape Ann Tool Co. building (property now for sale) and the old boats are part of the Essen Shipbuilding Museum. Reedy River Park and the Swamp Rabbit Trail : After a while it is time to get away from the computer and go take pictures. We went to one of our local hiking and recreation sites, The Swamp Rabbit Trail and Cleveland Park. These are all black and white with a platinum toning algorithm. The New England Coastal Cruise : These Martha's Vineyard images were taken mainly at Oak Bluffs. The center of the town is composed of the Methodist Camp Ground Tabernacle which is surrounded by gingerbread homes built on the original tent platforms. The merry go round is one of only two originals by the builder Charles W.F. Dare. At Edgarton we mainly hit the beach and lighthouse. The current trip installment starts on 85 and ends on 164. It includes Block Island, New Bedford fishing fleet and finally Newport. Some of the images have clues as to where we are. This set starts at image 165 and includes some images from the cruise ship including Newport Harbor, some bridges and of course more boats. Most of the onshore images are from Warren Rhode Island our port of coming and going. The last set will be of the trip home. Have fun.

Antique Cars at Hagood Mill : A group of my photographic friends from our Furman OLLI program went to Hagood Mill near Pickens, SC to the North Carolina Antique car Tour. The cars are marvels of pre electronic engineering and the Ford Model T's are go anywhere cars. They could probably out do SUV's on really rotten roads. All the cars are things of great beauty and I am glad they are being maintained and driven.

Finds in Anderson, SC : Old Store and Cotton Mill-A friend of mine and I went to an old store and mill site in Anderson (which he had found) and here is my record. The old store is like a last reminder in the middle of a fairly new subdivision. The mill, though coming down, still is a magnificent piece of industrial architecture from its heroic scale to its small details. While I wish it were being preserved, I did enjoy photographing it in its current state.

Monuments and Fields : Agriculture related buildings are monumental in size and shape. They also have interesting planes and surface details. Winter fields are as interesting to me as fields in full greenness. The closely related images are an attempt to show the effects of different viewpoints. I have added the Frank Gehry designed museum in Minneapolis. I think the forms are very similar.

Atmospherics : Bright sunshine is not needed to take interesting photographs. I just finished a small format book that my wife, Alice will hand bind. The book is composed of pictures taken in rain, fog, ice and very cloudy weather conditions. When translated to black and white with platinum toning filter applied, they become very intense and somehow personally meaningful. So take your camera out in the "bad" weather, protect it with a motel shower cap and have fun.

Trip to Newberry, SC : Alice and I decided we needed to go for a ride so we drove the back way to Newberry. Little is more uninformative than traveling on the interstate. The first little group of pictures is from an old warehouse type building just outside of Woodruff. We then wended our way to Rosehill Plantation. That is a great place to visit in the late spring when the roses are blooming but before the weather is too hot. The final group is of Newberry all done up for Christmas. Fall in South of England : My wife and I spent two weeks in southern England while she taught weaving. I had loads of free time and shot every day essentially all day. England is a place where the old is preserved and cherished. The buildings, fields and farms are very inviting. The px will be in chronologic order from the airport to home again. Ruins of Northern New Mexico : These pictures are from Pecos National Historic Park and Bandelier National Monument. The Bandelier site is famous as one of the cliff dwellings of the Anasazi's. Pecos was the home of the Pecos Indians as well as one of the first archeologically studies sites in the US. Travel is great.

Around and About Albuquerque : Albuquerque has always been an airport and rental car on the way to Sante Fe until the Convergence trip. I had the chance to drive around Albuquerque, Lamy and a few other towns close by. I enjoyed the wandering from Albuquerque's Old Town to the scrap metal yard and nearby river side park. Spring on Oregon Coast : This trip to the Oregon coast to visit friends corresponded to the lowest tide of the year (planned by the friends). It is also the time of great spring flowers. This is a very large gallery and represents coastal trips, a farmers' market, fishing fleets, crab pots, junk and general poking around. Take your time and sample multiple times. Enjoy the trip.

Greenville Scottish Games : The Scottish Games at Furman University is on its way to becoming a tradition in Greenville. Here is my group of images from the 2010 edition. The British Car Show was an added attraction. I missed two photographic subjects. The first was a delicious scone with strawberries and cream. The second was Prince Edward, a royal guest and visitor. My scone was consumed before I thought to photograph it and my px of Edward were too fuzzy to be really OK. I will try to do better next time on both subjects.

What Kind if Pictures Do You Shoot? : When I meet folks and we talk about photography they ask me what do I shoot. I tell them I shoot whatever is front of me at the. I really do not specialize, I try to make the best pictures of whatever I see. Lately the snow here has been pretty but not so much as to be disasterous. The color pictures are of our yard with the reading hut our son designed for us. The black and white pictures are from the landscaping around the Ranger's Office at the Carl Sandburg house in Flat Rock, NC. The new pictures starting on the end of page 1 through page 3 are from a trip with two of my buddies to Whitewater Falls, N.C. It is one of the more spectacular waterfalls in our region. It was a cold winter's day just before a snowstorm, which I will add as soon as I am finished with them.

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden : This is a group of px from a trip we took to the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, Columbia, SC. A great place. I concentrated on garden px. The zoo was mobbed, noisy and hot. Road Trip to Minneapolis : This group of images was taken on a road trip to Minneapolis. There are many more photographs than what I am showing (for now). Between Greenville, SC and Minneapolis, Minn. there are lots of great things to see. I was fascinated that the rest areas were really park like in some area and the first two pictures are from a rest area. The trip started in South Carolina and went to Dubuque, IO and on to Minneapolis. There are place shown we drove through, ate at, and visited. Let me know if anyone would like to see more. Delmarva Trip : This gallery portrays our trip around the Delmarva Peninsula. We stayed for a bit in Wilmington, saw Petersburg, VA (at night), Wintertur Gardens and Museum and then went on to Chesapeake City. From there we went down the East coast of Maryland, the North Carolina Outer Banks and then home. Memories : Older Buildings and Other Structures-We build buildings, bridges, boats and other structures for our work, play and homes. I have always found these inviting places to look at and try to guess their stories. This is a group of images pulled from many outings across the country. Visually I am attracted to the planes and shapes as well as the atmosphere of the places. I opted to show these in black and white because for some things color detracts from what the visual meanings of the images represent for me. The new first page includes pictures of abandoned farms in the Upstate of South Carolina. Some of the buildings date back to the 1800's. The ghosts are abundant.

Memories

The Black and White of It All : I have addressed how pictures with a fair range of colors or even a bit monochromatic would look in black and white. I thought that my Southwest images would be a good experiment. I know that Ansel Adams, etc. photographed the area in black and white. That should never stop a photographer or any artist (or even non-artist) from playing with their chosen media. I find that I enjoy the abstraction that removal of colors provides. I anyone wants my workflow for this please leave a comment and I will try to reply.

On to Maine and Back : Our latest driving trip to Maine was as good as it gets. This first set of pictures is mainly from flowers and other scenes from rest stops. One should always get out of the car whenever possible and just look around. Seeing stuff is the main reason to drive, not fly. Most rest stops have interesting things to see like flowers, stretching motorcyclists, architectural details, etc. The last picture is from a restaurant in a middling sized New England town. I thought I caught the spirit of the place. The end page 2 through page 10 are from Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut. It is truly a magical place where our seafaring past is well-represented. Page two is nautical with a few fog pictures which are fairly characteristic of the coast. Fishing boats with traps and pots make for fun viewing.

Driving to Maine in 08. : These pictures represent the Great 08 Maine Road Trip. They are more or less chronologic and include friends, scenery, road shots and favorite New England places of my youth. My other blog http://bruceobservationtower.blogspot.com/ explains a bit more. The pictures of the cars, planes and space capsule were taken in one of America's great transportation museums. It is located in the town of Owls Head, Maine and is oddly enough called the Owl's Head Transportation Museum (http://www.ohtm.org/). The old cars provide the majority of the exhibits that I saw. The is the least edited of my SmugMugs. I never met a car I did not want and here was my chance to have and share them all. Plan to visit the museum. We did it as part of our road trip to Maine. Very apropos. That is the type of museum visit to do on a car trip. Enjoy
